ppppmmmmiiiinnnnffffoooo - display information about performance metrics

ppppmmmmiiiinnnnffffoooo displays various types of information about performance metrics
available through the facilities of the Performance Co-Pilot (PCP).
Normally ppppmmmmiiiinnnnffffoooo operates on the distributed Performance Metrics Name
Space (PMNS), however if the ----nnnn option is specified an alternative local
PMNS is loaded from the file _p_m_n_s_f_i_l_e.
The metrics of interest are named in the _m_e_t_r_i_c_n_a_m_e arguments. If
_m_e_t_r_i_c_n_a_m_e is a non-leaf node in the PMNS, then ppppmmmmiiiinnnnffffoooo will recursively
descend the PMNS and report on all leaf nodes. If no _m_e_t_r_i_c_n_a_m_e argument
is given, the root of the PMNS is used.
Unless directed to another host by the ----hhhh option, ppppmmmmiiiinnnnffffoooo will contact the
Performance Metrics Collector Daemon (PMCD) on the local host. The
connection to a PMCD is only required if ppppmmmmiiiinnnnffffoooo requires distributed PMNS
information, and/or meta-data describing metrics, and/or metric values,
and/or help text.
The ----aaaa option causes ppppmmmmiiiinnnnffffoooo to use the specified archive rather than
connecting to a PMCD. The ----aaaa and ----hhhh options are mutually exclusive.
The ----bbbb option may be used to define the maximum size of the group of
metrics to be fetched in a single request for the ----ffff and ----vvvv options. The
default batchsize is 20.
Other options control the specific information to be reported.
----dddd Metric descriptions detailing the PMID, data type, data semantics,
units, scale and associated instance domain.
----ffff Fetch and print values for all instances. When fetching from an
archive, only those instances present in the first archive record
for a metric will be displayed; see also the ----OOOO option, else use
ppppmmmmdddduuuummmmpppplllloooogggg(1) which may be a better tool for examining archives.
----FFFF Same as ----ffff but try harder to fetch instances for metrics which have
non-enumerable instance domains (e.g. metrics in the ``proc''
subtree of the default PMNS).
----mmmm Print the PMID in terse mode.
----MMMM Print the PMID in verbose mode.

PPPPMMMMIIIINNNNFFFFOOOO((((1111)))) PPPPMMMMIIIINNNNFFFFOOOO((((1111))))
----OOOO When used in conjunction with an archive source of metrics and the
options ----ffff or ----FFFF, the _t_i_m_e argument defines a time origin at which
the metrics should be fetched from the archive. Refer to
PPPPCCCCPPPPIIIInnnnttttrrrroooo(1) for a complete description of this option, and the
syntax for the _t_i_m_e argument.
When the ``ctime'' format is used for the _t_i_m_e argument in a ----OOOO
option, the timezone becomes an issue. The default is to use the
local timezone on the system where ppppmmmmiiiinnnnffffoooo is run. The ----ZZZZ option
changes the timezone to _t_i_m_e_z_o_n_e in the format of the environment
variable TTTTZZZZ as described in eeeennnnvvvviiiirrrroooonnnn(5). The ----zzzz option changes the
timezone to the local timezone at the host that is the source of the
performance metrics, as identified via the ----aaaa option.
----tttt Print the ``one line'' help summary, if available.
----TTTT Print the help text, if available.
----vvvv Verify mode in which descriptions and values are retrieved, but only
error conditions are reported. This option silently disables any
output from the options ----ffff, ----MMMM, ----mmmm, ----tttt and ----TTTT.
